[Akira and I were leaving the university library after several hours of studying for an exam, something we often do together. We stopped to say good night.
"Good night, Akira. See you tomorrow. I know you'll do well on the test."
Akira took me by surprise. "Keiko, let me kiss you good night. Come here, come close to me."
"What are you doing, Akira?" I asked, hardly able to speak. "You are my best friend. We have been friends for five years. You are closer to me than my broghter. And now you want to kiss me?"
"Yes, very much. I want our relationship to be even closer," Akira said.
"No, no no! I don't think of you in that way. You are my friend. Best friends don't act that way," I said.
Then Akira said, "What? Keiko? I'm confused... I don't understand. Don't you see me as a man?"
"Of course you are a man. And a handsome man, Akira. But you are a special man-my best friend. But we can't do this. Don't you understand?" I tried to explain myself to him, but he still didn't understand.
He said, "No, not at all, Keiko. Here is how I see it. You are a woman and I am a man. We like each other very much. We are very close to one another. So let's do what is natural in any male-female relationship."
I said, "Natural? I think our freidnship is natural. I thought I understood you, Akira. maybe I was wrong."
"So you really don't like me at all! You just want someone to talk to. Well, Keiko, find someone else to talk to. I'll find a woman who sees me as a man."
Akira turned and walked away quickly. As I walked to my apartment, I thought about what had happened and I felt so sad. In my heart, I knew Akira was wrong. Men and women can be friends without being lovers. But maybe I was wrong. What if all men think like Akira? I don't know.]

More commonly known as a keffiyah or shemagh, the Arab scarf is a square cloth made of a breathable fabric, which is wrapped around the head. Men wear keffiyahs to block the sand and dust from blowing up into their eyes as they are traveling or taking care of regular chores. Women of Muslim faith or Arab descent have been known to wear their scarves, otherwise known as hijab, in more abundant ways. The hijab is worn to completely cover their heads so that no hair is shown, and nothing but their hands and feet may be displayed in public. Though it is custom for women to cover thier faces, leaving only their eyes open to the public in Saudi Arabia, some have been seen covering even that from public view.
