12 Killed in Batman Shooting in U.S. (21st July, 2012)
A gunman killed 12 people and wounded 59 at a Colorado cinema early Friday
morning. Police apprehended the killer and identified him as James Eagan Holmes,
24, a former neuroscience PhD student. He armed himself with an assault rifle, a
shotgun and a pistol and fired at random at moviegoers attending the midnight
premiere of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises". Holmes had dyed his
hair red, just like Batman's nemesis the Joker, and wore full body armour and a
gas mask. Many initially thought he was part of a stunt for the movie screening.
Cinemas in New York got police protection after the shooting to prevent copycat
killings. The premiere in Paris was immediately cancelled.
U.S. President Barack Obama has led the mourning after the massacre, ordering
flags to be lowered to half-mast. He said: "There are going to be other days for
politics. This, I think, is a day for prayer and reflection." The shooting has
once again reignited the debate on gun control in America. All the weapons used
in the killings were bought legally in a local gun store. The shooting brings
back memories of the 1999 Columbine High School murders, just 25km from the
cinema, in which 13 people lost their lives. Tragedies like this are becoming
all too common but do little to get tighter gun controls enforced. Gun ownership
is a right in the USA. There are an estimated 192 million firearms in the
country.

(CBS) CHICAGO - A pregnant 25-year-old woman lost her baby after a group of males and females beat her Monday night on a sidewalk in Chicago, the Chicago Sun-Times Media Wire reports.
The woman, who remains unidentified, was walking on South Laflin Street, roughly four blocks away from her home, at around 11 p.m. when the group approached her and exchanged words, police reportedly say.
Members of the group allegedly punched the woman, knocked her to the ground and then continued the beating, landing blows to her arms and stomach, police said, according to the Sun-Times.
A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office says the woman, who was at least 7 1/2 months pregnant at the time of the beating, lost her baby in the womb as a result of the attack.
The baby girl was born stillborn Tuesday afternoon at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.
As of Wednesday, no one was in custody in connection with the assault. Police say it may have been gang-related.

ReplyDeleteAnother South Korean shot dead in Philippines. (2013-06-30)
A South Korean man was shot dead in the Philippines on Saturday, said the South Korean embassy in Cebu City.
The victim surnamed Jeong was shot twice in the head by two unidentified assailants around 3:00 p.m. (local time) on his way out after having a cup of tea with his colleagues. Jeong died on the spot.
According to the local police and witnesses, the two gunmen who were seemingly Filipinos took off on their motorbikes after firing five to six times toward Jeong and his driver. Jeong‘s driver was injured in the shooting and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Jeong, who has lived in the Philippines since 2000, was working at a small currency-exchange shop near a casino in Cebu. The police suspected the motive of the murder to be related to a contract killing.
This is the third time this year for a South Korean to be shot dead in the Philippines. In 2012, eight South Koreans were murdered in the Philippines, accounting for some 30 percent of all South Koreans who were victimized in international murder cases worldwide.

Three American women who went missing separately about 10 years ago were found on Monday inside a house in Ohio where they had been held captive, local media reported.
ReplyDeleteAccording to CNN and AP, a woman who identified herself as Amanda Berry called the police emergency dispatch and said she had been kidnapped. She pleaded to the police to pick her up before her captor returned.
Authorities went to the house and found Berry, who disappeared on April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday.
They also found Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight, who were reported missing in 2004 and 2000, respectively. DeJesus was 14 and Knight was 20 at the time of their disappearance.
Police arrested the 52-year-old owner of the house and his two brothers in relation to the kidnapping, but did not release details on the suspects.
The news came as a shock to the suspect’s neighbors because he looked and acted like an ordinary man, according to a neighbor who provided information leading to the arrest.
